Festivals Month by Month<\/h1>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator sep_color=”color-gyho”][vc_column_text]Moj\u00e1car, quiet and calm, becomes very lively during its festivals, in which are evident its past, its culture and the art of its people. Of special note are Carnival (February), St. Augustine (August) and Moors and Christians (June), the latter a very beautiful and colourful receeation \u00a0of historical events.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]CARNIVAL.<\/strong> February. Taking place before Lent, this pagan festival fills the streets with people wearing highly original costumes and fills the air with original songs. The procession along the main beach road is a colourful musical extravaganza. [\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]BURIAL OF THE SARDINE.<\/strong> Ash Wednesday. Literay the Sardine\u00b4s funeral, this celebration, taking place one carnival is over, signals the transition from earthly pleasure to spiritual contemplation.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]ANDALUSIA DAY. <\/strong>28th February. This day is celebrated with various concerts, in wich the different\u00a0 municipal\u00a0schools of music and dance always play an important part.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]DIA DE LA VIEJA. <\/strong>Thursday\u00a0in the middle of Lent. This is a day when the whole family goes to the countryside to enjoy a picnic.\u00a0 According to ancient tradition, “la vieja” or\u00a0old woman, (a rag doll\u00a0made on a wooden cross frame, dressed in tissue paper and whose\u00a0head is full of sweets) is stuck into\u00a0the ground. At the end of the day the\u00a0doll is broken open and the sweets inside\u00a0eaten.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]HOLY WEEK.\u00a0<\/strong>This celebration hovers between mysteries of the divine and\u00a0the pagan. At night the beautiful religious images are borne silently throug the city streets on the shoulder of their bearers while spring in all its glory is welcomed by the lively atmosphere on the bars\u00b4 terrace. During the day there is a unique atmosphere mixing relaxation on the beach with the solemnity of the Old Quarter\u00b4s different places of interest.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]SAN ISIDRO.<\/strong> May. This fiesta celebrates the heroic deeds which led to the cultural\u00a0religious interchange between Moors and Christians. This is Mojacar\u00b4s most important fiesta and everyone\u00a0joins in.\u00a0\u00a0The\u00a0hight point comes on Sunday afternoon with a grandiose procession which starts at Moj\u00e1car\u00b4s highest streets and ends\u00a0in the lower part of the village, close to the\u00a0fountain.\u00a0More about it<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]MOJ\u00c1CAR \u201cROMANTIC NIGHT\u201d <\/strong>\u00a0June.<\/p>\n

Experience the most romantic night of all\u2026. Live music, special themed menus, squares and streets full of decorative balloons, photo call and much more. Everyone joins together for the most romantic kiss at midnight.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]SAN JUAN NIGHT <\/strong>23th of June.<\/p>\n

\nSardines, bonfires and fireworks to celebrate the most magical night of the year.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]FIESTAS DE SOPALMO. <\/strong>Early August. In honor of Cristo Rey. This is Moj\u00e1car at its most genuine, when the Queen of the fiesta and her handmaidens\u00a0are crowned and there is\u00a0a traditional “corrida de cintas” competition of horsemanship, where riders must spear a small ring hanging from a ribbon.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]CANDLELIT NIGHT. <\/strong>Coinciding with the night of San Lorenzo’s Tears (known as the rain of stars) the historic Moj\u00e1car Pueblo hosts its famous \u201cNight of the Candles”.
\nMoj\u00e1car offers to visitors the chance to contemplate the starlit sky by turning off the electric lights and lighting the Pueblo with candles.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]FESTIVITIES OF SAN AGUSTIN<\/strong>. 28th August. Coinciding with the weekend, Moj\u00e1car celebrates its fiestas\u00a0in honour of its\u00a0patron saint. Festivities incluide sport, evening celebrations and corridas de cintas.The floral offering merits a \u00a0special mention: women in traditional Moj\u00e1car costume carry their\u00a0 water pitchers full of water and\u00a0flowers in a procession from\u00a0the fountain\u00a0to the church.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]DIA DE LA PATRONA: VIGEN DEL ROSARIO. <\/strong>7th October. This celebration of the Patron of Nuestra Se\u00f1ora del Rosario includes different activities, such as\u00a0the\u00a0traditional “corrida de cintas”. The townswomen married\u00a0wear traditional dress.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]CHRISTMAS IN MOJACAR. <\/strong>December. Christmas sees recital of popular carols, activities for children and the New Year celebration in the shadow of the church\u00b4s clock tower. This is followed on 5th January by the Epiphany parade.
